Getting up at night for sunrise, especially in winter, has always been the biggest challenge to me. In New York I lived in Middle Village, Queens, and commuting by train either to DUMBO or to the Lower East Side, Manhattan, where I usually photographed sunrises, was quite difficult and took time consuming. On the other hand, it was worth it almost every single time. I reached my favorite spot on Manhattan Bridge long before the sunrise, set up the equipment and started taking photos of the bridge. I was waiting and waiting for the desired harsh golden light, but it wasn't appearing as the sky was cloudy. Having lost my patience and hope, disappointed I finally dismantled the gear, folded the tripod and prepared to leave. Suddenly, the long awaited golden light hit the Downtown buildings. For me, as a photographer, it was like a revelation. I had no time to lose and couldn't reset the equipment, therefore, despite poor lighting conditions I took a few shots holding the camera stable in my hands. It was all I could've done during these 30 seconds, as the sun quickly went beyond the horizon and hid behind a cloud. I was very lucky to witness and capture that moment, one of the most memorable in my collection.
Location: Manhattan Bridge, New York
