The Story

The night flight above NYC was one of the most exciting, although unplanned experiences. We took off with an extensive delay due to some technical issues with the helicopter and didn’t make it for sunset. I was angry at the time, but now I can say it was a blessing in disguise. The views at night were extraordinary and breathtaking. It was difficult to focus on shooting, as watching without looking through the lens was very tempting. New York reveals many of its secrets and looks only at night. While taking this particular shot, I put off the camera with my main 24-70mm f/2.8L lens on it and picked the one with 50mm f/1.4 (I always fly with two cameras). Thanks to the specific qualities of the fixed focal length lens I was able to capture the scene with lower level of noise and significantly sharper detail at 1/200s, f/2.0, ISO1600. And at the end of the day there was no loss, as the flight operator offered me a free sunset flight at a later date as a compensation for missing the sunset.
