The Story

I'm very sentimental about the initial period after moving to New York in 2014, when I grabbed the camera backpack and walked mostly around Manhattan for entire days. I suddenly found myself in a shockingly different world in every dimension possible. I still remember the slices of pizza I ate right next to the Jackson Heights/Roosevelt Ave subway station for breakfast, the hustle and bustle of that neighborhood, the impression that the city gave me. This photograph reminds me of those days. On a November Saturday morning I grabbed the camera again and headed to Midtown, discovering the city which I had always seen in my dreams. Nearly every view at every corner turned out fascinating or at least interesting to me. Passing by the tunnel at Park Avenue South, I noticed that most of the cars in the line were yellow cabs. At the time I thought that they were waiting in a line to enter the Grand Central Station, which is in the background, underneath the Metlife Building. I had no idea then that there's no entrance to the station for cars, but this is how I described the photo in the (accepted) PhotoVogue Italia submission. The title is therefore inaccurate, but it expresses the idea I had while photographing the scene. It's also still one of the most memorable and most valuable photographs I took during that period.

Location: Park Avenue South (Manhattan), New York
