The Story

There’s nothing more appealing and extraordinary in New York to me as a photographer than the unique reflections on the facades of the buildings. If there was one thing I would be seeking to photograph, it would be this phenomenon. One can encounter it in most of the bigger cities around the world, and yet in New York there’s something that makes it more special, outstanding and even magical. Most of the passers-by, whether locals or tourists, don’t bother to notice it. In this sense, they’re a hidden treasure of the city, despite being visible and available to everyone. On the other hand, they may not appear as interesting or artistic in reality as in photographs. Therefore, it’s my task to find them with my eye, capture my way and then edit the photographs, highlighting crucial features of the images, but maintaining their integrity at the same time.

When describing „reflections” I mean two phenomenons.

The first one comes down to the sunlight bouncing from the modern glass skyscrapers, which work as giant reflectors, to the facades of the old buildings made from raw bricks. It’s all about timing here, because the light changes angles and directions accordingly with the movement of the sun in the sky. Because of that, almost every other minute and indubitably every other hour the effect is totally different. The reflections are also very irregular in shape, what makes them even more visually attractive and original.

The second phenomenon is more ordinary, but still offers a natural artistic effect. It’s the surroundings, sky, sun and clouds reflecting in the windows of the modern skyscrapers, which in this context play the role of gigantic mirrors. Especially when the sky turns dramatic by being filled with shredded, rapidly-moving clouds, the glass facades are serving me as fantastic canvasses, on which the nature paints its works and I’m there to freeze the moment in the frame and create my interpretation of it.

Most of the time I photograph reflections using tele-lens (70-200mm), as I want to capture a narrow excerpt of a facade. Sometimes, however, the whole building or even an entire panorama is worth presenting in a photograph. One World Trade Center, for instance, often appears as a diamond during blue hour and it’s best to show it along with the surrounding skyscrapers in Lower Manhattan.
