The Story

The Oculus building in Lower Manhattan was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava to resemble a dove taking flight. The originality of its architectural form probably surpasses all the other buildings in Manhattan. The structure is formed by softly-curving, white, steel ribs that rise from below the ground to form an elliptical dome over a vast concourse. Inside of it, there is a shopping mall and an entrance to the World Trade Center subway station.

Due to its extraordinary shape, the building is quite tricky to photograph. And I wanted to capture it together with the One WTC tower, so I kept on walking around, seeking the "right” perspective in order to attain the composition and crop I had in my mind long before I arrived there with the equipment. What I ultimately created perhaps wasn’t mirroring exactly what I had envisioned, but this rarely happens – usually something even better comes out in the proces. Having found numerous opportunities to shoot (and resigned after only looking through the viewfinder), I finally decided to take a few shots precisely from this spot, allowing the wing to cross the crop in the foreground and the One WTC tower to emerge from behind it, whereas the other WTC building is filling the gap on the right side. I took advantage of the shadows and lights, attempting to shoot from the side where I could capture the highest contrast possible, but it was the extensive black and white editing that made it truly explicit and perfected the whole work.
